The Capital got crazy with football as they went into flurry of Mexican waves. The 25,000 football maniacs were relishing the chance to catch a footballing event of this magnitude for the very first time in their lifetime.
The game was drab overall as both sides failed to put the ball in back of the net as th crowd witnessed a goalless draw. There were some illustrious guests in the crowd as FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke saw the proceedings from the VIP box along with other FIFA members and Sania Mirza.
There was a Dutch flavour to the Delhi team as they have prominent Dutch contingent along with their Oranje kit. Alessandro Del Piero started the game from bench as the 39 year old was regaining the match fitness. The match was dull in its entirety as both teams struggled to get any sort of penetration.
The game turned on its head for Dynamos with the introduction of Del Piero in 37th minute. The Italian brought on that creative spark back in the game. He and Malswamtulunga or better known as Mama, started to get the ball rolling for the Orange boys. Mama’s pace and Del Piero’s runs were constant threat in the second half along with Mads Junker.
Del Piero was clearly visible that he was the marquee signing as the stadium thundered with chants of ‘Del Piero’ everytime he touched the ball. Dynamos came agonisingly close in second half on three occasions. Del Piero’s cross found Junker who was thrawted by Pune’s best player on field their keeper Emanuelle Bellardi. Del Piero then struck one to the post and in the dying seconds Brazilian Gustavo Santos again struck the post.
David Trezeguet was subued for almost all the time as Pune’s midfield failed to provide him with anything whatsoever.
