Dortmund for the first time this season had first back to back wins as they played an exciting match against FC Mainz by winning a six goal thriller at Westfalenstadion. Marco Reus led the hosts with a goal and an assist to a 4-2 win propelling them out of the relegation zone.
Mainz shocked the hosts with a goal in the very first minute of the match as Mainz’s midfielder Elkin Soto caught Dortmund’s Roman Weidenfeller out of his line to pump in a sublime volley past him. This goal rattled the hosts who then were then on the front foot and tried to take the game. For the majority of the first half the hosts were held off by the visitors.
It took a powerful header from Nevan Subotic to level the things as he pounced onto a Marcel Schmelzer. And within four minutes Marco Reus gave the hosts lead by scoring a super goal post his contract extension with the club. But their lead was short lived as Mainz struck within 30 seconds as Yunnus Malli scored the equalizer to stun the home crowd.
But Dortmund were in no mood to relinquish this game as they struck once again via Pierre Emrick-Aubameyang as Marco Reus’ set him up with a fantastic through ball. Reus was lethal in the second half as he ran riot out on the flanks. He was instrumental in Dortmund’s second half fight back with his efforts overall.
Soon, Nuri Sahin’s 80th minute goal sealed the deal for the hosts as they clinched up all the three points and got out of the relegation zone with 22 points.
