Antonio Habas’ boys advance into the inaugural finals of the Indian Super League as they edge past Zico’s FC Goa by a virtue of a 4-2 penalty shootout win at Margao.
It was an encore of the leg in Kolkata as both the sides failed to breach other’s defence due to shabby finishing and lack of attacking play. Chances in an 120 minute game were far and few in between as both teams had tactically read each other to the perfection.
Atleti were lined up in their usual and more cautious three man midfield while the Goans were in their free flowing two pronged attack. Both the teams had near misses but none of the goalkeepers were called in to make a brilliant save. Hence a shootout was needed to separate these supremely identical sides.
For Kolkata, it was cent percent conversion rate as Josef, Mohammed Rafi and Jofre scored as they pounced on the fragile keeping from Goan stopper.
Goa’s star player Andre Santos stepped up to take the first penalty for the hosts but to everyone’s shock he missed it as he hit it way above the cross bar. Ozbey leveled the things with Amiri’s strike to the post was the last nail in the coffin as Goa was eliminated by the Kolkatans.
