Ancelotti sacked, Benitez successor
Real Madrid Club President Floretino Perez announced that Carlo Ancelotti has been fired as the manager, exactly a year and a day after the club won the 10th Decima with him. Real Madrid has fired 9 bosses in just 12 years. The news of Ancelotti’s dismissal was certainly not taken well by the fans and the players alike. 58-year-old fitness coach Giovanni Mauri and 66-year-old goalkeeping coach Viliam Vecchi have also been sacked.
Following a meeting with the board of directors, Perez announced : “I want to tell you that we have decided to relieve Carlo Ancelotti.”
“This has been, as you can imagine, a very difficult decision for the board but as always we have not come here to Real Madrid to take the easy decision but the best decision for the institution.” He added.
“Carlo is now part of our history. The manager won La Decima. As we all know, at Real Madrid the demands are maximum and we think it is time for a new impulse, A new impulse which can allow us to win titles and achieve a maximum level of competition.” He further said
“With our great team, talent, and hard work, we will be able to give satisfaction and happiness to our fans and our members. I want to publicly say thank you to Carlo Ancelotti for these two years, for his hard work and all his affection, and tell him this is still his house and his home.” He further added.
Ancelotti secured the 10th champions league trophy for Real Madrid last campaign, a campaign where he also won the Copa del Rey. He also won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP in his second season. Real managed to get 22 successive victories under Ancelotti’s guidance but couldn’t win a major trophy which lead to this harsh decision.
Ancelotti’s Madrid boasts a win record of 75%. Madrid have 88 games, lost 16 whereas 13 ended as draws. His team also had a stellar +199 goal difference. The Italian has been offered jobs from England, Italy and Spain as well however, however he’s keen to take the Year off and get the pending back surgery over with.
Napoli’s Rafael Benitez is rumoured to be Ancelotti’s successor but names like Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp, Germany manager Joachim Low, Sevilla's Unai Emery and ex-Madrid player and former Sevilla and Olympiakos coach Michel, as well as one-time superstar and current Madrid youth team boss Zinedine Zidane have also come up.
Rafael Benitez started his coaching career with Real Madrid B and he even played for Madrid’s youth teams more than 20 years ago. He has coached clubs like Valladolid, Osasuna, Extremadura, Tenerife, Valencia, Liverpool, Chelsea and Inter Milan. He was reportedly close to signing a 6 million euro a year deal for two seasons at West Ham but he hasn’t accepted the job as yet.
Benitez has had coaching experience in Spain apart from Real Madrid B as well. During Benitez’s time at Valencia, He managed to win the La Liga twice and took them to two consecutive Champions League finals, winning one and losing on penalties to Bayern Munich. Valencia also won the 2003–04 UEFA Cup (Europa league). Benitez has also helped two Spanish sides (Tenerife, Extremadura) clinch promotions to La Liga.
