England 5-0 San Marino Match Report

ENGLAND STARTING XI: Hart; Chambers, Jagielka, Cahill, Gibbs; Wilshere, Henderson, Milner; Sterling, Welbeck, Rooney

SAN MARINO STARTING XI: Simoncini; Palazzi, Della Valle, F Vitaioli, Buscarini; Coppini, M Vitaioli, Cervellini, Tosi; Selva, Rinaldi

England continued their good run of form post World cup debacle as they registered a routine 5-0 win over minnows San Marino.

San Marino are ranked 208th in world, the joint lowest along with Bhutan. So this was match practice for all the English players especially for Wayne Rooney, who scored his 42nd goal for England through a spot kick.

Phil Jagielka opened the scoring for Three Lions as they went into the lead after a somewhat below par display throughout the first half. England got their second via their captain’s spot kick couple of minutes before the interval.

England made a few changes in second half as they started testing their bench warmers with Adam Lallana, Andros Townsend and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got some game time.

Danny Welbeck tripled the advantage just inside 5 minutes into the second half. Welbeck’s replacement, Townsend soon scored a goal for himself as England were on course for yet another thumping of San Marino, a team of amateurs and semi-pros.

Defender Della Valle scored a comical own goal for the Italian province as England registered a comfortable win without even working hard for it. More than England’s five goals, the match will be remembered for the antics of San Marino stopper who did some very out of the box keeping.
