Some happy news for the Nigerian football players and fans as Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has escaped a ban from global football.
NFF was banned by FIFA in July after there was government and external interference in the functioning of the federation. Later on, fresh elections took place which led to the ouster of President Aminu Maigari and election of Chris Giwa. FIFA rejected that result of the ballot and banned the federation until all its regulations were met.
Now Maigari has been reinstated as the head of federation and has been tasked to preside over the new electoral process. This clears Nigeria to play their African Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa today.
The statement from Confederation of African Football was issued yesterday.
"In a letter dated 9th September, addressed to the president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Aminu Maigari, the secretary general of FIFA, Jerome Valcke noted the return to normalcy in the Nigerian Football Federation and compliance with conditions prescribed by the emergency committee of FIFA of September 3. The NFF is accordingly not suspended," the statement read.
The statement also added a list of FIFA recommendations, which read: "The correspondence of the secretary general of FIFA is accompanied by recommendations including the need for the urgent holding of an executive committee and a general assembly of the NFF and defining and adopting the road map for the NFF elections as soon as possible."
