Southampton FC A Cinderella Story

Anyone who has watched this Russell Crowe starrer movie will know why this title is apt for this piece. An underdog story where the underdog rises to glory against all odds, sounds familiar, isn’t it?

Southampton has had glorious turn of fortunes after organizing a end of season sale for Premier League’s elite. They were tipped to be in the mix for the relegation battle and zoom into January they are challenging for a Champions League spot. They sit third in the league table, two points ahead of Manchester United.

Ronald Koeman’s magic wand has worked yet again as he breathed a new lease of life with some really shrewd piece of business over the summer. Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle have seamlessly adjusted in the places left vacant by Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert. Loan signings of Ryan Bertrand and Toby Alderweireld have been real game changers.

They made a blistering start to the season and had a blip in form just before the festive fixtures, where they dropped points against top half teams. But since Boxing Day, Saints have been their former selves where they have brushed Arsenal away at St. Mary’s and ground out results against Chelsea and Manchester United, whom they edged 1-0 at Old Trafford with a superb defensive display.

If they can sustain this form over the course of the season, no doubt they will make a spot in the top 4 their own and may upset either Manchester United or Arsenal’s Champions League hopes.
