Today we look at current FC Goa coach and Brazilian legend – Zico Arthur.
Zico Arthur who took charge of FC Goa is in the inaugural Indian Super League season, is considered as of the greatest footballers living. Often known as the white Pele, Zico revolutionized the number 10 role in football. Zico who was a dead ball specialist and skilful player played 71 times for his country and scored an incredible 48 times, making him the countries fourth highest goal scorer.
Zico represented Brazil in three world cups – 1978, 1982 and 1986 but couldn’t win it. Zico is always considered one of the greatest players to not to have won the world cup. He was named the player of the year in 1981 and 1983. Zico was numbered eight in the FIFA player of the century by the grand jury.
Club Career:
Flamengo (1971-1983)
Zico started his footballing adventures at Brazilian club Flamengo. He made 212 club appearance for his home side, and scored an incredible 123 goals. Which is absolutely brilliant for a number 10. Zico spent majority time of his career at Flamengo and in Brazil.
But there was a two year spell where he embarked on a journey to Italy, where he joined Udinese. There he made 39 appearance in two seasons and scored 22 goals. Zico was incredibly gifted in terms of football but could not stay in Italy for too long as he felt home sick.
He re-joined his home and former side Flamego where he played more four years of his football. Before moving to japan where he joined Kashima Antlers which was very late in his career.
Zico retired from playing all forms of football in 1994.
Management:
After retiring the Brazilian legend returned home to spend time with his family, before he over took the job of managing. His first managing job was at his last playing club – Kashima Antlers. Zico’s knowledge of Japanese football embarked and gave him the thrown as the Japanese national team manager. He managed Japan for four years before he was sacked.
Zico then joined Turkish side Fener and toured the world as he went on to coach CSKA Moscow, Olympiacos, Iraq, Al-Gharafa and now India – FC Goa.
