Vermaelen Could Move to Manchester

Aug 03, 2014 14:40

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hinted at the fact that his captain and centre-back Thomas Vermaelen could leave the London club amidst interest from some top European teams.

Louis van Gaal, the new Manchester United manager has made his interest known to sign the Belgian, but with Wenger keen on not letting a direct rival such as United snatch him up, Barcelona look like the favorites to land him.

Arsene Wenger spoke to the media and spoke about the player where he divulged a number of facts, he said: “He is injured at the moment for a short-term injury. It could happen, yes. It’s a possibility that he goes. If he goes, we have to replace him because he’s an important player in our squad.

He, however, expressed intent to keep the player saying: “No, I expect him to stay but he, of course, did not play enough games last year. For me he’s a very important player but I couldn’t guarantee him the games he wanted last year.

The Frenchman also revealed that he’s not quite done in the transfer window and exclaimed that he wants to do more: “I am very happy because I did what I wanted and I am still hoping to do more. It is 1 August and the transfer window closes on the 31st. It is a long time.

“We are a bit ahead of what we usually do because the availability on the market was bigger than before,” finished the 64-year-old.

Arsenal could miss his strength and tackling at the back:
