Newcastle United’s versatile Argentine Jonas Gutierrez made a successful return to competitive football after recovering from his testicular cancer.
The Argentine is a fan favourite in Tyneside and was given a hero’s reception on his return to St James’ Park against Manchester United.
Fellow Argentine and club captain Fabricio Collecini paid his respects to him by handing him the captain’s armband to him as soon as he stepped on the field. Gutierrez shared his glee over his return to the competitive football.
"I will remember for the rest of my life the reception," he told BBC Sport.
"I'm really happy with that and the support the fans gave me and the support through the illness.
"The support I have had from clubs all around the world, they don't matter about the shirt, it has helped me keep fighting."
Fellow players and media pundits too paid him tributes and welcomed him back onto the pitch.
Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea tweeted: "The other great happiness of the night was seeing @elgalgojonas on the pitch!”
Gutierrez tried to inspire people with his tale of grit and glory and encouraged everyone to fight on.
"For people having the trouble I have been through, you have to be positive," Gutierrez said.
"If you believe in the heart you can beat the problems, you can."
