Ribery could retire due to injury
After struggling to recover from an ankle injury suffered in March, the former French international’s ankle was immobilized earlier this month – but it seems the setback could be serious enough to force the 32-year old into an early retirement.
Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge:
‘Franck has suffered too many stoppages in recent seasons, we should have counted on him in a more continued manner. But it’s clear that, statistically talking, he has missed a lot of games in recent seasons because of injuries,’ Rummenigge said.
Ribery is no stranger to injury, in his eight years with Bayern Munich he has missed 79 league matches, or the equivalent of two and a half full seasons.
After finishing third in the 2013/14 Ballon d’Or voting he has only played 45% of the games under new manager Pep Guardiola and only featured in 15 Bundesliga games this season, managing to net five goals in that time.
In an interview sourced from French newspaper L’Equipe, Ribery’s agent Jean-Pierre Bernes was quick to deny any rumors of a potential retirement saying,
“Franck is not the type to give up. On the contrary: He’s desperate to return to playing and he doesn’t know when that will be, so he is worried about the situation. He is doing everything to return and he wants to end his career in a good way, not like this.”
